Prague is perhaps best known for the Charles Bridge, named for the Czech King Charles IV who commissioned the bridge's construction in 1357. This stone bridge is Europe's oldest and reaches 516 meters across the Vltava river. It's 9.5 meter width is lined with rows of Baroque statues and large Baroque towers guard either end. The bridge connects Mala Strana with Stare Mesto, Prague's two oldest quarters. Offering a stunning view of the Prague Castle and the baroque buildings on either side of the river, one cannot visit Prague and not cross the Charles Bridge at least once.

The Bridge actually spans Kampa Island and as you cross over the island, you can look down onto Kampa's main square. Stairs lead down from the bridge to the square which is largely a pedestrian zone leading to Kampa Park. Our apartment on Kampa Island is just off the Charles Bridge, the third building on the left-hand side of the square. The doorway is slightly shorter than a modern door, because when the building was constructed in the early 15th century, people were somewhat smaller! After ducking in the front door, you ascend two flights of ancient wooden stairs to find our apartment.

After passing through the door, you enter the kitchen. The kitchen was designed by an artist and although unusual in construction, is fully functional. You'll find there all the amenities you need to prepare a meal with. There are cups, dishes, pots and pans, a microwave, silverware, a stove top to heat up pasta, for instance, and a sink for washing up later.

In the living room, which you get into by passing through an ancient door and a half you'll find a wonderful dining room table and four chairs, a couch which pulls out into a double bed and a couple of chairs which are ideal for reading or passing away the time in.

There are two single beds fitted with modern mattresses and comfortable linens and sheets in the bedroom. Two ancient wardrobes and a dresser make it easy to unpack and hang your things up so you can enjoy your stay more thoroughly while in Prague. There is also a stereo and to get to sleep with and an alarm clock to wake up by.
After a hard day of sight seeing, you can come back to Kampa and relax. Take a shower, open a bottle of wine, swing open the windows, kick your feet up and enjoy being in the heart of Prague.
